Tragic News About Teen Mom Who Refused Cancer Treatment While Pregnant

A teenaged mother who refused to have cancer treatments while she was pregnant with her unborn daughter passed away last week.

This young woman is absolutely a hero for taking these steps to ensure the life of her daughter was protected and that she would be given the gift of life. Truly inspiring story.

When Dana Scatton was 17 and pregnant, she found out she had an inoperable brain tumor. Instead of immediately undergoing radiation treatment to potentially prolong her life, she delayed treatment to protect her unborn baby, whom she gave birth to in January — just days before Scatton turned 18.

A Facebook page run by Scatton’s family shared the sad news last Monday.

“This morning shortly before 4am, Dana left us to be with the lord,” the family announced. “We may never have the right things to say to truly honor the amazing, smart, loving, caring, passionate, incredibly beautiful and free spirited mother, daughter, niece, sister, cousin, friend and independent woman Dana was every day.”

Scatton, a Christian and one of nine children herself, “inspired us all to be better than who we are and to keep God in our focus at every moment,” the post continues. “She faced the greatest fear of all, death, and smiled back with a grin only God can instill. She fought harder than the toughest warriors known to man and did it with grace and valor.”

“We don’t know how to process all of this but we want to thank everyone for all their prayers for Dana and our family,” writes the Scatton family.

The family closed out the social media post with a piece of Scripture, one that Scatton lived her life by after she was diagnosed with this awful disease:

“So do not fear, for I am your God;

Do not be dismayed, for I am with you,

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10

This young woman is truly a hero in every sense of the word, especially for her daughter, who though she will have to grow up without a mother, will know that she was truly, deeply loved by the sacrifice this beautiful soul made so she could live.

The Bible tells us there’s no greater gift of love than a person willing to sacrifice themselves for the wellbeing of another, a lesson we see personified in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross on behalf of sinners in desperate need of salvation from the wrath of God we all so richly deserve.

Dana took that lesson to heart when she opted to trade her life for that of her unborn daughter. With her faith in Christ, Dana is no doubt enjoying being united to her Savior, dancing on the streets of heaven, rejoicing in her own salvation and knowing that her baby girl will have an opportunity to worship the God who made it all possible.
