Trump Has Message For California Concerning New ‘Green’ High Speed Rail. They Aren’t Going To Like It.

If you’ve read anything about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s nightmare of a plan, the “Green New Deal,” you know there’s no shortage of things to criticize contained in it.

However, one of the items that folks have been poking fun at has been the whole high-speed rail travel bit. Apparently, Ocasio-Cortez wants to reduce emissions by get rid of air travel, replacing it with trains. Oh and to accomplish this measure in the next ten years.

Well, right on the heels of this revelation, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his state was cancelling almost all of the high-speed rail project that was already over a decade in the making. Guess how much money this cost taxpayers? Try $77 billion.

President Trump has come out saying California should give back all of the federal taxpayer dollars they wasted on the project.

“California has been forced to cancel the massive bullet train project after having spent and wasted many billions of dollars,” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. “They owe the Federal Government three and a half billion dollars. We want that money back now. Whole project is a ‘green’ disaster!”

Newsom set himself up to be called out by the president. In his State of the State Tuesday, the liberal governor specifically mentioned trying to figure out a way not to pay federal taxpayers back.

“Let’s be real,” Newsom said in his State of the State address. “The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency. Right now, there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A. I wish there were.”

Having admitted that the Democrat-led California government could not be relied on to handle complex building projects and failed on the key issues of oversight and transparency, Newsom refused to entirely let go of the high-speed rail dream — in part because he didn’t want to give that $3.5 billion back to Trump.

“Abandoning high-speed rail entirely means we will have wasted billions and billions of dollars with nothing but broken promises, partially filled commitments and lawsuits to show for it,” said the Democratic governor. “And by the way, I am not interested in sending $3.5 billion in federal funding that was allocated to this project back to Donald Trump.”

Right now, the only part of the rail that will be completed is the Central Valley portion that goes from San Francisco-to-Los Angeles.

Now, after having seen how much of an unrealistic endeavor it is to build high-speed rail for transportation, perhaps folks who are in the Democratic Party will wake up and realize just how foolish it is to propose this means of travel as a replacement for planes. It’s ridiculous to say the least.

And Trump is right. The state of California owes the rest of us a refund. There are many, much more worthy projects those funds could be allocated toward. Like the border wall for example.
