Even Labor Unions Aren’t Thrilled With The ‘Green New Deal’

As Democrats continue to panic about the possibility of having to vote on the atrocious Green New Deal — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s pitifully constructed monstrosity — labor unions are now voicing their opposition to the legislation citing it could result in the loss of jobs.

Man, when you even lose support of the unions, you know what you’re proposing is complete stinker of a bill.

Several union leaders told Reuters that the GND would result in job losses for their blue-collar members, and expressed skepticism that the promises of good jobs in clean energy could be achieved. Yvette Pena O’Sullivan, executive director of Laborers’ International Union of North American (LIUNA), told Reuters that job losses would “surely come” if the GND were to become a reality.

“We will never settle for ‘just transition’ language as a solution to the job losses that will surely come from some of the policies in the resolution,” she said.

LIUNA represents a broad range of American workers, including construction workers, janitors, and health care workers, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. They also give almost exclusively to Democrats. In 2018, the union gave $1,782,271 to Democrat congressional candidates and just $398,100 to Republican candidates, though some of the top recipients were members of the GOP. LIUNA and its affiliates gave $5.5 million to the Democrats’ Senate Majority PAC during the 2018 election cycle, and $3 million to their House Majority Pac.

Phil Smith, spokesman for the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), told Reuters his union also is also worried about the “just transition.”

“We’ve heard words like ‘just transition’ before, but what does that really mean? Our members are worried about putting food on the table,” he told the outlet.

UMWA represents mine workers and also gives heavily to Democrats. During the 2018 midterms, the union gave 72% of its contributions ($269,500) to Democrats and 28% ($121,000) to Republicans.

Look, there’s no way this is Green New Deal junk is going to pass. As bad and progressive as most of the folks are in Congress, most of them know that if they pass something as radical as this, they will lose their meal ticket.

Their opposition to the fulfillment of measures they have actually been calling for for years reveals a significant hole in their armor. They talk a big game, but have no desire to back it up with real, tangible action.

The fact they’re so wrapped up in their own self-interest that they wouldn’t dare jeopardize their position is really good news for conservatives. It means that, while we can’t appeal to them on the basis of human decency, we can speak to their own selfish desires and possibly negotiate them back from the edge of insanity.
