Legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld doesn’t appear to be a real big fan of political correctness, which is something he recently put on full display when he launched an all out rebuke on the Oscars for giving Kevin Hart the boot from hosting duties.
Hart was forced to step down from the job because of old jokes he made that “offended” the LGBTQ community. Hart had apologized once, long ago, for the jokes, but that’s not enough to appease today’s modern day witch hunters.
Last week, Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the Oscars over old jokes offensive to the LGBT community, most of them revolving around his fear about his son becoming gay. As the backlash online mounted, the Academy demanded that Hart publicly apologize or face firing; hours later, he declined that apology and announced he would be stepping down.
“I chose to pass. I passed on the apology,” said Hart in an Instagram video. “The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it. I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were. I’ve said who I am now versus who I was then. I’ve done it. I’ve done it. I’m not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old when I moved on. I’m in a completely different space in my life.”
Ultimately, Seinfeld believes, the Academy “screwed” themselves by how they handled the situation, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
“Kevin is in a position, because he is a brilliant comedian, to kind of decide what he wants to do,” Seinfeld said. “He doesn’t have to step down. But he can.”
Seinfeld continued, “And when you look at the situation — well, who got screwed in that deal? I think Kevin is going to be fine, but find another Kevin Hart: That’s not so easy. He’s a brilliant guy with a movie career.”
Seinfeld absolutely nailed it. The Academy has only hurt themselves by going full SJW, as Hart will still continue making films and stand up specials to sold out crowds. His career won’t be dramatically impacted by any of this.
However, ever since letting him go, the Academy has been scrambling to try and find a worthy replacement for him. The search is apparently not going well, prompting them to consider the possibility of not having a host at all. Well, that’s the rumor floating around town anyway.
Political correctness is a true destroyer of worlds. How long is it going to take Hollywood to learn that lesson? We’ve seen disaster strike with James Gunn, Roseanne Barr, and Tim Allen. The knee jerk reaction by big studios has led to numerous projects taking severe hits.
It looks like it will take a major hit to their bottom line for them to truly get it.
