The city of Seattle is run by a group of Democrats who act like full-fledged socialists. They continue to pass one ordinance after another to force their socialistic policies on the people and businesses of the city. Some of these policies have only hurt the city but the officials are so blinded by their agenda that they fail to see the true costs of their actions.
Back in 2015, the Seattle city council passed a tax on the sale of all firearms and ammunition. It called for a $25 tax on the sale of all firearms and 5¢ on every round of ammunition. They anticipated that it would help reduce gun violence and generate between $300,000 to $500,000 additional tax revenue for the city every year.
The ordinance took effect on January 1, 2016. In the first five months of 2017:
“…reports of shots fired are up 13 percent, the number of people injured in shootings climbed 37 percent and gun deaths doubled, according to crime statistics from the Seattle Police Department.”
Sales of guns and ammunition in the city dropped by as much as 60%, resulting in people losing their jobs or having their hours cut and it only generated about $100,000 the first year. Many Seattle residents were smart enough to go outside the city to buy their guns and ammo. The city ordinance was legally challenged and the city ended up spending a lot more defending their ordinance than they brought in on the taxes.
Seattle was the first major city to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. The move was supposed to help lower income workers. However, it was reported that the higher minimum wage resulted in a 9% reduction in worker hours and an average decrease of $125 per paycheck. The move also cost the city 5,000 jobs.
Obviously, city officials failed to learn their lesson as they then turned around and passed an ordinance placing a 2.2% tax on the net earnings of everyone in the city earning $250,000 or more a year. For couples filing jointly, the limit was set at $500,000. Note that Seattle is home to Boeing and Microsoft and has its fair share of wealthy individuals and the majority of those wealthier people are Democrats, meaning the city is taxing their own supporters more for being successful.
Now, Seattle’s officials are pushing their alleged tolerance and equality standards on landlords. They passed several ordinances that violate the constitutional rights of landlords. One ordinance, referred to as the ‘first in time’ law forces landlords to rent to the first qualified applicant even if the landlord has a good reason to select someone else. If the first applicant doesn’t take the rental, the landlord has to select the next in line chronologically, again regardless of other circumstances.
The ‘first in time’ ordinance was challenged in court with the help of Pacific Legal Foundation. A judge ruled that the ordinance violated the landlords’ constitutionally protected right to choose who they want to allow on their private property, referring to the small landlords who rent rooms in their homes or rent homes they own.
The same group of landlords are now legally challenging another ordinance with the help of PLF. This ordinance, ‘Fair Chance Housing Ordinance’ which makes it illegal for a landlord to consider a person’s criminal history when considering their rental application. That means if a landlord rents a second home they own, they can not rent it to someone who has a criminal history of operating a meth lab. It also means that if someone rents a room in their own home, they can not rent it to a convicted child molester or rapist.
PLF claims that the ‘Fair Chance Housing Ordinance’ is also a violation of the constitutional rights of landlords.
When you add all of these ordinances up, it shows that the Democrats running Seattle are trying to establish a socialist city. They want to dictate who can sell what, how much you have to pay an employee, how much you can earn and who you have to rent to. They are insisting on controlling the lives of the people as much as they possibly can which provides a good reason NOT to live in Seattle.
