The last American held by North Korea who was released back to the United States was Otto Warmbier. When he returned, he was reported to be in a coma but others who interacted with Warmbier and his family said he was making howling noises, didn’t recognize anyone and showed signs of severe torture. He died just 6 days after returning to the US.
North Korea has been holding 3 other Americans as prisoners and new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has just returned from his second trip to North Korea and this time, he is returning with the three Americans. They are reportedly in fine health but then official statements said there was no sign of torture of Otto when others who saw him said it was more than evident.
(Fox News) – Three American prisoners held in North Korea have been released and are en route to the U.S. after a surprise diplomatic mission by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, President Trump announced Wednesday.
Pompeo is returning with the Americans, said to be in “good health,” after a brief visit to Pyongyang. Trump said he plans to greet them at Andrews Air Force Base when they arrive outside Washington.
“I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting,” Trump tweeted, referring to the prisoners. “They seem to be in good health.”
I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health. Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un. Date & Place set.
The release of the three Americans is considered to be a good will gesture on the part of Kim Jong-un before he meets with President Donald Trump. Experts believe that Kim did not want the prisoners to be a stumbling block to his peace talks with Trump, although many are still wondering what his real motives are. Don’t forget, that North Korea promised to denuclearize back in 1992 but never kept that promise.
