Have you ever known someone who promised to do something they really didn’t want to do and when they attempted to keep their promise, their effort was less than genuine or effective and sometimes only made things worse?

I recall the 1964 presidential campaign between then President Lyndon B. Johnson (D-TX) and Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ). America was still in the earlier years of the Vietnam War. Goldwater campaigned that since the US was fighting in Vietnam and our troops lives were in harm’s way that he would do whatever was necessary to win the war and bring our troops home, even if it meant dropping a nuke on North Vietnam. Johnson ran a campaign of peace, saying he would bring our troops home.

Consequently, Johnson won one of the largest landslide victories in American history. He won 44 states plus DC with 61.1% of the popular vote and 486 Electoral votes to Goldwater carrying only 6 states with 38.5% of the popular vote and only 52 Electoral votes.

When it came Johnson keeping his promise on Vietnam, he went back on his word and sent thousands more US troops to Vietnam. Instead of pulling the US out of Vietnam, Johnson’s actions led to the death of 50,000 more American troops and many more wounded and scarred for life.

When Jimmy Carter (D-GA) was president, fifty-two Americans were captured and held hostage by Iran. Carter promised to do something to rescue the Americans held hostage. A childhood friend of mine was a special forces squad leader and his team was ready to go in undetected, free the hostages and get them out of Iran. All they needed was the order from Carter. Instead, Carter sacrificed additional troops by mounting a doomed rescue mission that was a total failure from before it started. The American hostages spent 444 days in captivity and my friend’s special forces unit spent over 400 days on board ship waiting to do their job but Carter would not give the order.

When I look at what Barack Obama, another Democrat, did in the Middle East with ISIS, it reminds me of Johnson and Vietnam and Carter in Iran. Obama kept vowing to destroy ISIS, but since he is a Muslim with strong Muslim affinity for many countries that hate America, his efforts to destroy ISIS were half-hearted at best.

True Obama sent US troops into Syria to help defeat ISIS, but when he had the opportunity to do just that, he never gave the order. In August of 2016, US forces drove hundreds of ISIS fighters out of several Syrian cities and the ISIS fighters left in convoys traveling across the desert. US A-10 Warthogs could easily have destroyed the convoys and killed hundreds of ISIS fighters but the orders never came and the ISIS fighters traveled into the desert to live to fight another day.

Then candidate Donald Trump promised:

“I will…quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS.”

After he became president named Retired General (4-stars) James Mattis, US Marine Corps, was named as Secretary of Defense, he promised:

“We will not have to listen to the politicians who are losing the war on terrorism.”

As for keeping their promises Fox News reports:

“Just over a year later, ISIS has been routed from Iraq and Syria with an ease and speed that’s surprised even the men and women who carried out the mission. Experts say it’s a prime example of a campaign promise kept. President Trump scrapped his predecessor’s rules of engagement, which critics say hamstrung the military, and let battlefield decisions be made by the generals in the theater, and not bureaucrats in Washington.”

“At its peak, ISIS held land in Iraq and Syria that equaled the size of West Virginia, ruled over as many as 8 million people, controlled oilfields and refineries, agriculture, smuggling routes and vast arsenals. It ran a brutal, oppressive government, even printing its own currency.”

“The terror organization now controls just 3 percent of Iraq and less than 5 percent of Syria. Its self-styled ‘caliph,’ Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is believed to be injured and holed up somewhere along the lawless border of Syria and Iraq.”

We’re told to learn from history and these lessons teach us that if you need something done with the military, DON’T PUT A DEMOCRAT IN CHARGE!!!
