After the recent shake-up in the Saudi royal family, Mohammed bin Salman emerged as the new Crown Prince and apparent heir to the throne. He is already making his new-found power and authority known as he pursues an alliance with other Islamic nations and powers to work together to combat and end Islamic terrorism from the earth.
The alliance he speaks of was established in 2015, but little has been accomplished, possibly due to a lack of strong leadership, which bin Salman seems to be taking. The announcement came as officials from about 40 Muslim nations gathered in the Saudi capital of Riyadh over the weekend. During and after the meetings, it was mentioned of a ‘pan-Islamic unified front’ consisting of 41 countries.
(AFP ) – Saudi Arabia’s crown prince vowed to “pursue terrorists until they are wiped from the face of the earth” as officials from 40 Muslim countries gathered Sunday in the first meeting of an Islamic counter-terrorism alliance.
“In past years, terrorism has been functioning in all of our countries… with no coordination” among national authorities, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Saudi defence minister, said in his keynote address to the gathering in Riyadh.
“This ends today, with this alliance.”
The summit is the first meeting of defence ministers and other senior officials from the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, which officially counts 41 countries and identifies as a “pan-Islamic unified front” against violent extremism…
The alliance spoken of by bin Salman does not include all Muslim nations as Iraq, Iran and Syria were not invited, mainly because they are dominated by Shiite Muslims while Saudi Arabia is controlled by Sunni Muslims. The two sects within Islam are bitter enemies and responsible for much of the Islamic terrorist actions, since ISIS appears to be Shiite driven as well.
