Washington politics is broken and I’m not sure it’s repairable. Democrats hate and refuse to work with Republicans and Republicans hate and refuse to work with Democrats. Then to make things worse, you political in-fighting within the Republican Party that has effectively made them impotent to accomplish anything worthwhile.
That GOP impotency has led to frustration on the part of President Donald Trump who did the unthinkable this week. He turned to Democratic leaders in the House and Senate in order to get an important piece of legislation passed that will allow for the raising of the debt ceiling and some funding for the relief efforts for the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
When Republicans complained about Trump’s deal with the Democrats, he responded by blasting them for their failure to get anything done, including on healthcare.
President Trump tore into congressional Republicans Friday for their failure to pass big legislation, effectively firing back at critics griping about his dealings this week with Democratic leaders.
“Republicans, sorry, but I’ve been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn’t happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will … never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control – will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!” he tweeted.
At the same time, Trump tried to light a fire under GOP lawmakers to get to work on his next big agenda time: Tax reform.
“Republicans must start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP. Don’t wait until the end of September. Needed now more than ever. Hurry!” he tweeted…
Congressional Republicans are so busy fighting amongst themselves and against President Donald Trump that they may well be on the way of handing control of Congress over to the Democrats in the next couple of years. Honestly, I don’t blame Trump for turning to Schumer and Pelosi to get things done since McConnell and Ryan don’t seem to be able to get their act together.
