Predicting weather may seem like an exact science, but it’s not. A Friend of mine retired after over 20 years as a meteorologist with NOAA and he often told me that God intentionally changes things to keep meteorologists humble.
This was the case with Hurricane Irma. It seems that every time experts predicted Irma’s course, Irma changed course and fooled them. That change caught many of the residents of the Florida Keys and the southwestern coast of the state off guard. They all expected Irma to turn north and impact the southeastern coast around Miami and move north.
Although Irma was huge enough to cover the entire state, many residents in the Keys were not expecting to take a direct hit from Irma but they did.
As residents begin to return, the devastation in the Keys is becoming known.
After Hurricane Irma ravaged the string of islands known as the Florida Keys, officials are now warning tourists and residents to stay away until further notice, noting: “The Keys are not open for business.”
Houses and mobile homes were uprooted and other infrastructure was destroyed, while an innumerable amount of boats in the Keys also suffered damage from Irma’s powerful winds.
In a tweet Monday morning, a WFOR reporter said “it’s hard to describe” the lower Florida Keys, but it could be best described as a “war zone.” …
Even though Irma is has moved north into the Midwest, the Florida Keys and other areas of southern Florida are still without any power, running water, cell phone service and no fuel. Many homes and businesses have been completely destroyed. The devastation is so severe, that authorities are insisting that people prove residency before being allowed to return to some of the islands in the Keys.
