The news has been plagued with hundreds of reports of opioid overdoses, deaths and abuse. We’ve all seen the reports of a parent dying of an overdose of heroin while their young children watch. We’ve seen the reports of a driver of a care passing out and dying before crashing into another car, building or person.
Closer to home, there was a recent local news story of a couple both shooting up and then overdosing on heroin laced with deadly fentanyl while their two young children just sat there and watched. the images were heart-breaking.
President Donald Trump held a news conference while on his working vacation to announce that his administration was going to work to help fight the opioid epidemic that is sweeping the nation.
With the opioid crisis intensifying and dozens of Americans dying of drug overdoses each day, President Trump pledged Tuesday to “beat this horrible situation” at a briefing held here during his 17-day “working vacation.”
“During my campaign, I promised to fight this battle because as president of the United States my greatest responsibility is to protect the American people and to ensure their safety,” Trump told reporters before the event was closed to the press. “Especially in some parts of our country, it is horrible.”
The president said that the “best way to prevent drug addiction and overdose is to prevent people from abusing drugs in the first place.” …
I agree that one of the best ways to fight the drug problem is to prevent people from trying them in the first place. Another way is to secure our borders and stop the flow of tons of illegal drugs. I still contend that Trump needs to place our military personnel along our border to protect America from illegals and drugs instead of protecting borders of other nations so far away.
